"This is a no-win situation," NASCAR president Mike Helton said.
The delay of a Sunday race until Tuesday is seemingly unprecedented, but the forecast appears to be in line with that move, particularly with the possibility of tornadoes involved.
NASCAR said the safety of fans was part of its consideration.
With an earlier start, such as 1 p.m., much of the race, if not all of it, might have been run Sunday. But by the 7:30 p.m. starting time, rain was already moving in.
